Loder, Lazor Medal at Midlands Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - Two wrestlers from the University of Northern Iowa medaled at the Midlands Championships, and the team finished 13th with 49.5 points.
"It was definitely a team performance. They scored a lot of bonus points," said head coach Doug Schwab. "We want to keep moving up in those rankings and score as many points as we can. That was one of the better Midlands tournaments they have had for a while."
Ryan Loder's only losses en route to his fourth-place finish in the tournament went to Travis Rutt of Oklahoma. Rutt beat Loder 3-2 on the first day, and the two met again in a match to decide third. Rutt prevailed again, winning 7-5.
"Loder rode him well but got caught in the bad position," said Schwab. "We just need to get him to break through. Fourth isn't what he wanted, but it was a pretty tough class. He finished ahead of his seed."
Joey Lazor, who was not seeded, finished seventh. He started the day with a forfeit from CJ Cobb of Penn. After being pinned by Mike Magnum of Oregon State, he came back to beat Jason Tsirtsis, wrestling unattached for Northwestern, by a 7-1 decision.
"He really had a great tournament," Schwab said of Lazor. "He could have felt pretty bad after he got pinned earlier in the day, but he came back and took seventh. He's getting better every time out. I am looking forward to seeing where he will be in a month after seeing how far he has come in the last month. It's very encouraging."
The other two Panthers who were in the running for third place were eliminated early in the day. Levi Wolfensperger lost by major decision to Mason Beckman of Lehigh. Bart Reiter lost a 2-0 decision to Shane Welsh of Lehigh.
"Bart found ways to win, and you could see his confidence build," said Schwab. "I was encouraged by the things I saw."
The team's 13th-place finish was ahead of No. 17 Nebraska, No. 18 Maryland, No. 22 Penn and No. 21 Purdue.
"I saw guys wrestle back well," said Schwab. "It's a good springboard for the next month. We just need to get more guys on the stand."
The Panthers are back in action at 7 p.m. Jan. 5. They host Iowa Western Community College in the West Gym.
"We have a pretty good idea of what we need to hammer to have them ready for nationals and conference," said Schwab. "These two tournaments have prepared us for the upcoming meets. I am looking forward to getting back to work. They are encouraged. We are going to have plenty of time to get ready."
