
Panthers Take Down Southern Illinois in Four

CARBONDALE, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis 3-1 in Carbondale Friday night.
Amy Braun led the way for the Panthers with 18 kills and Megan Lehman followed closely with 17 kills. Molly Turk recorded 54 assists and Braun also led in digs with 23.
Southern Illinois jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the first set. Kills by Amy Braun, Megan Lehman and Macy Ubben helped tie the set up at 10-10. The Panthers took advantage of an attack error by the Salukis in the next play to take the 11-10 lead, but Southern Illinois got a kill in the next play to tie it back up at 11-11. The set went back and forth several more times until the score was tied up at 15-15. A kill by Braun helped UNI to spark a 5-1 run to give the Panthers a 20-16 lead. UNI kept up this momentum and won the set 25-19.
The roles reversed in the second set, and UNI jumped out to the early lead. The Panthers were ahead 9-5 at the first timeout of the set. Southern Illinois brought it to within two at 13-11, but that was the closest they got to the Panthers. UNI maintained the lead throughout the rest of the set and won it 25-16.
The third set went back and forth at the beginning until the score was tied at 11-11. Southern Illinois took advantage of an attack error by UNI in the next play and that helped them to go on a 5-1 run to give them the 16-12 lead at a UNI timeout. The Salukis increased that lead to 20-13, but the Panthers were not giving in that easily. They fought their way back until the set was tied at 21-21. UNI took advantage of an attack error to take the 22-21 lead, but the Salukis answered with a kill in the next play to tie it up at 22-22. The set went back and forth like this until the score was tied at 27-27. Southern Illinois took advantage of two straight attack errors by UNI to get the 29-27 set win.
The fourth set started out similar to the third set. The score was tied at 10-10 when a kill by Lehman helped the Panthers go on a 7-2 run to make it 17-12. Southern Illinois slowly started to creep back until the score was within one at 23-22. An attack error by the Salukis in the next play gave UNI the 24-22 lead, but Southern Illinois answered with an attack error in the next play to make it 24-23. A kill by Molly Turk in the play after gave UNI the 25-23 set win and the 3-1 match victory.
The Panthers return to the court tomorrow when they travel to Indiana to take on Evansville at 5:00 p.m.
