MADISON, Wis. - The Northern Iowa wrestling team lost its opening dual meet of the season to Wisconsin, 24-13.
"The first one gets to you a little bit, but we will get better from here," said head coach Doug Schwab. "We need to win the close ones and figure out how to get the upsets."
Senior David Bonin, who is ranked second in the Mid-American Conference at 157 pounds, won with a major decision over Kalvin York.
"Bonin looked sharp getting bonus points," said Schwab. "He looked even better than he did last week."
Other wins came from returning NCAA qualifier Levi Wolfensperger at 133 pounds. He won 6-4 with a takedown in overtime against Tom Kelliher.
"You have to win the close matches and find ways to get those bonus points in dual meets," said Schwab. "Those guys who won found ways to do that."
Redshirt freshmen Jarrett Jensen and Cody Caldwell won by decisions at 165 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively. Caldwell of Waverly, Iowa, is ranked 18th by Intermat and Amateur Wrestling News.
Five out of the nine wrestlers who competed for UNI were redshirt freshmen.
"We want to be one of the best teams, so we need to compete with the best individuals nationwide," said Schwab. "The other team doesn't care how many freshmen you have. We have our expectations, and we will find ways to meet those."
UNI will head to the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas, Nev., Nov. 30 through Dec. 1.
"This obviously isn't the way we wanted to start, but we build from here and get ready for the next one," said Schwab. "We have a big tournament to get ready for next weekend. We will focus on that."
