UNI WBB Picks Up First Win Against South Dakota, 63-50

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team notched their first win of the season against South Dakota, defeating the Coyotes 63-50.
Redshirt freshman Jen Keitel led the way for the Panthers with 18 points and six rebounds in just her second collegiate game. Jacqui Kalin scored in the double figures for the second game in a row finishing with 15 points and three steals.
The Panthers took a quick 4-0 lead in the first half when South Dakota was penalized with an administrative technical prior to the game starting. Kalin hit her two free-throws and after the tip-off Amber Kirschbaum scored her first two points off a nice turn-around jumper.
After a 7-0 run by the Coyotes, Keitel and Sharnae Lamar got the Panthers rolling again off a lay-up from Keitel. Lamar then answered with her own points, shooting a long-jumper from inside the arc giving the Panthers an 8-7 lead and sparking a 9-0 run with 15:43 left in the half.
Stephanie Davison kept another UNI 7-0 run alive that started at the 9:00 mark in the half with a three-pointer giving the Panthers a 22-12 lead with 7:50 left. The UNI defense kept the Coyotes at bay, holding them scoreless for four straight possessions.
UNI entered halftime with a 36-20 lead. The Panthers shot 50 percent during the first half with Keitel leading the way with 10 points and three rebounds. Lamar added to the Panther score with six points and three assists.
After a dry-spell to start the second half, Kalin extended the Panther lead to 39-28 off a three-pointer, giving her eight points. Kalin struck again at the 13:19 mark with another three-pointer off a pass from Keitel to the outside arc.
Kalin ignited a 9-2 run by the Panthers with help from Hannah Schonhardt. The Panthers extended their lead to 16 off a jumper from Kalin and a put-back by Schonhardt.
UNI put on a show with 5:26 left in the game when Lamar, Kalin and Keitel linked together for a nice pass-and-go under the basket for a Keitel lay-up, giving the Panthers a 61-42 lead. Kalin scored the final two points of the game giving the Panthers the 63-50 win.
