The Panthers Top Bulldogs 3-1

DES MOINES, Ia.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team got the 3-1 win Saturday night over the Drake Bulldogs in Des Moines, Iowa. The Panthers are now 6-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference and remain tied in first place with Creighton.
Macy Ubben led the way for the Panthers with 16 kills and a .389 attack percentage, and Megan Lehman followed close behind with 15 kills. Molly Turk recorded 45 assists and Candice Burke notched 23 digs for UNI.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the first set, a kill by Krista DeGeest helped the Panthers get the 6-5 lead. UNI maintained a small lead throughout the match until Drake caught up and tied it at 22-22. An attack error by UNI in the next play gave Drake the 23-22 lead, but Lehman answered with a kill in the next play to help UNI tie it back up at 23-23. After going back and forth several more times, the score was tied at 26-26. An attack error by Drake and a kill by Amy Braun in the next two plays gave the Panthers the 28-26 win in the set.
The second set went a little smoother for the Panthers. The score was tied at 9-9 when a kill by Ubben sparked a 5-2 run by UNI to make it 14-11. UNI held the lead through the rest of the set and won it 25-18.
UNI and Drake went back and forth in the beginning of the third set. UNI finally gained the lead at 11-7, but the Bulldogs came back and tied it at 12-12. After tying several more times, Drake took the lead at 15-14 after a UNI attack error. Drake held a slim lead the rest of the set, but UNI could not answer. Drake won the set 25-23.
UNI jumped out to the early 9-4 lead at the first timeout in the fourth set. The Panthers took off after the timeout, and Drake could not keep up. UNI won the set 25-19 to win the match 3-1.
UNI returns to the McLeod Center on Tuesday when they go up against South Dakota State at 6:00 p.m.
