Panthers Sweep the Salukis

CEDAR FALLS, Ia.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team got the 3-0 sweep over the Southern Illinois Salukis Saturday night at the McLeod Center. UNI is now 8-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Creighton defeated Indiana State tonight so the Panthers and Bluejays are still tied for first place.
Amy Braun and Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 11 kills and Shelby Kintzel led with a .438 hitting percentage. Molly Turk notched 36 assists and Candice Burke had 17 digs for UNI.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the first set, a kill by Macy Ubben helped spark a 6-0 run by the Panthers to give them the 12-6 lead. UNI continued this pace and expanded their lead to 17-9 at the first timeout of the set. Southern Illinois could not answer this Panther run, and UNI went on to win the set 25-15.
A kill by Ubben in the beginning of the second set gave the Panthers the 5-4 lead and also helped them to go on a 8-3 run to make it 13-7. At this time, UNI boosted it's lead to 13 by going on a 7-0 run to make it 20-7. Southern Illinois started to make a comeback at the end of the match. UNI had the 24-15 lead when the Salukis went on a 5-0 run to make it 24-20. Krista DeGeest got the kill in the next play to give UNI the 25-20 set win.
In the third set, the score was tied at 5-5 when a kill by Amy Braun gave the Panthers the 6-5 lead. UNI held a slim lead throughout the match, and Southern Illinois eventually tied it up at 21-21. Several attack errors by Southern Illinois and a kill by Braun helped the Panthers go 4-0, which gave them the 25-21 win in the set and the 3-0 sweep in the match.
The Panthers will kick off homecoming weekend at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night in the McLeod Center when they take on the Indiana State Sycamores.
