
Panthers Get the 3-0 Sweep Over Indiana State

CEDAR FALLS, Ia.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team got the 3-0 sweep over the Indiana State Sycamores Friday night in the McLeod Center. The Panthers are now 9-1 in Missouri Valley Conference and still tied for first with Creighton.
Megan Lehman led the way for the Panthers with 11 kills and a .688 hitting percentage and Krista DeGeest followed with nine kills. Molly Turk had 31 assists and Candice Burke and Amy Braun each had 13 digs.
UNI was down 8-2 to the Sycamores early on in the first set. The Panthers fought their way back though to tie it up at 14-14. A service error by Indiana State gave the Panthers the 15-14 lead. UNI held a slim lead throughout the rest of the set. The Sycamores brought the score to within one at 21-20. Kills by DeGeest and Megan Lehman, as well as an attack error by Indiana State gave the Panthers the 24-20 lead, and they went on to win the set 25-22.
The second set was a different story for the Panthers. With the score tied at 4-4, UNI went on a 7-0 run, thanks to kills by Amy Braun and Molly Turk, to make it 11-4. The Panthers kept this pace up through the rest of the set and won it by a dominating 25-11 score.
The third set was a close one for the teams. With the score tied at 8-8, a kill by Turk helped to spark a 5-0 run to make it 13-8, Panthers. Indiana State slowly started to come back and eventually tied it up at 19-19. A kill by the Sycamores gave them the 19-20 lead but a ball handling error by Indiana State helped the Panthers tie it up at 20-20. The teams went back and forth until the score was tied up at 22-22. A kill by Turk gave UNI the 23-22 lead, and they pulled off the 25-23 win in the set to get the 3-0 sweep.
The Panthers will return to the court tomorrow night when they go up against the Illinois State Redbirds at 7:00 p.m. in the McLeod Center. Fans get into the match free when they show their UNI football ticket.
