Petersen Earns 300th Win With 3-0 Victory Over SIU

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa head coach Bobbi Petersen earned her 300th career victory when the No. 15 Panthers topped Southern Illinois 3-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams Friday night in the McLeod Center. The Panthers earned the win by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18.
Megan Lehman led UNI (11-1, 1-0 MVC) with nine kills, and Krista DeGeest put down eight. Bre Payton and Amy Braun each tallied seven. Payton also finished with 30 assists, and Braun led the Panthers with 12 digs. Michelle Burow finished with four blocks for UNI.
The Salukis (5-4, 0-1 MVC) led 15-11 in the first set, but UNI used an 11-1 run to build a 22-6 lead. With UNI leading 23-18, Lehman put down a kill to bring up set point. An SIU attack sailed long on the next point to give the Panthers the 25-18 win.
UNI never trailed in the second set, but SIU came within a point at 11-10. The Panthers went on a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 23-12. After SIU scored a pair of points, Braun and Lehman put down back-to-back kills to end the set in a 25-14 win for UNI.
The third set featured 10 ties and five lead changes. UNI trailed SIU 16-15, but managed to outscore the Salukis 10-2 the rest of the way to take a 25-18 win in the set and a 3-0 win in the match.
The Panthers recorded 7.0 team blocks, while SIU finished with 4.0. UNI finished with a team attack percentage of .188 while holding the Salukis to .020. UNI collected 54 digs, compared to 40 for SIU.
UNI returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Evansville at 7 p.m.
