
UNI Tops Evansville 3-0 For Third Straight Sweep

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The No. 15 University of Northern Iowa volleyball team recorded its third straight sweep when it beat Evansville 3-0 Saturday night in the McLeod Center. UNI topped the Purple Aces by scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-18.
Michelle Burow led UNI (12-1, 2-0 MVC) with 11 kills, committing just one error for a .556 attack percentage. Megan Lehman notched nine kills, Shelby Kintzel added eight, and Bre Payton and Amy Braun each finished with seven. Candice Burow tallied a career-high 30 digs for UNI, and Payton finished with 35 assists.
UNI held a 6-5 lead in set one, but a 3-0 run by Evansville (11-4, 1-1 MVC) gave the Purple Aces an 8-6 edge. The Panthers would not go back in front until a solo block from Braun gave UNI a 12-11 advantage. She notched a kill on the next point to give UNI a two-point cushion, 13-11. The Panthers held at least a one-point lead and led by as many as six on the way to the 25-20 win.
The Panthers hit .233 in the second set, while holding UE to a .020 attack percentage. Burow recorded five of her kills in the second frame. UNI built a 15-8 lead in the set, but UE scored three straight to cut the UNI advantage to 15-11. The teams traded points to keep the margin at four, and then UNI rattled off eight straight points to bring up set point, 24-12. The Purple Aces held off UNI for a point, but Eryca Hingtgen recorded a kill to end the set with a 25-13 UNI win.
The Panthers tallied 16 kills with just two errors in the third set, racking up a .378 attack percentage. Lehman finished the set with five kills. UNI broke a 3-3 tie with a 4-0 run that put the Panthers in front 7-3. The Panther lead stayed between three and four until UE scored to pull within a pair, 9-7. The Panthers scored the next three points, stretching their lead to 12-7. UNI led by at least three and as many as seven on the way to the 25-18 win.
UNI hit .270 in the match while holding UE to a .094 attack percentage. The Panthers recorded 10.5 blocks compared to 4.0 for the Purple Aces.
UNI returns to action on Friday when it plays at Illinois State.
