Panthers Come Up Short Against Wichita State

Waterloo, Ia.- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team (15-8) suffered a 5-2 loss to Wichita State University this morning in the last regular season game this season for both teams. With this win, Wichita State claims the MVC season title and the No. 1 seed going into the MVC Championships. UNI finished second in the MVC on the season and will go into the MVC Championships with a No. 2 seed.
Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker started doubles play with a win in their No. 1 match, defeating Veronika Blaskova and Montse Blasco Fernandez of Wichita State 8-3. Lara Okicki and Chelsea Moore fell to Lutfiana Budiharto and Raphaela Zotter of WSU 9-8 in the No. 2 match. Krissy Lankelma and Jessica Kunzelmann won their No.3 match 8-5 against Carla Venticinque and Delia Damaschin of the Shockers.
Walker fell to Budiharto of WSU 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Gonzalez lost a close match to Zotter, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 match. Blaskova of Wichita State defeated Okicki 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. Kunzelmann was the only Panther who came away with a singles win. She defeated Damaschin 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 4 match. In the No. 5 match, Moore lost to Wichita State's Venticinque 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lankelma lost her No. 6 match to Blasco Fernandez of the Shockers 6-1, 6-3.
"It was a great battle today", said Head Coach Sachin Kirtane. "I was really proud of the way the team played, but we just fell short in a couple places. Hopefully this will give us confidence going to St. Louis next weekend."
The Panther women head to the Missouri Valley Conference Championships next weekend in St. Louis. Play starts Friday April 29 and concludes Sunday May 1.
