Panthers Finish Road Trip with a Win

Normal, Ill.- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team (12-7) defeated Illinois State 5-2 in Normal, Illinois this morning. The Panther women now improve to 3-0 in MVC play.
In doubles play, Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Phoebe Walker fell to Aniko Kiss and Phyllis Tigges of Illinois State 8-6 in the No. 1 match. Chelsea Moore and Lara Okicki brought the Panthers back with a win in the No. 2 match. They defeated the Illinois State team of Hannah Esker and Ariane Maack 8-2. In the No. 3 spot, Jessica Kunzelmann and Krissy Lankelma cruised past Heather Nisbet and Carolina Abello of ISU 8-1.
In singles play, Walker fell to Kiss of Illinois State 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 1 match. Gonzalez defeated Illinois State's Tigges 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 match, Okicki won by default after Abello of Illinois State was injured. Kunzelmann won her No. 4 match, defeating Esker of the Redbirds 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 5 match, Moore lost a close battle to Stefanie Youngberg of the Redbirds 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Lankelma defeated Gabby Phillips of Illinois State 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 6 match.
The Panther women return to action Saturday when they take on Southern Illinois at 1:00 p.m. at home.
