
Panthers Roll Past Providence, 79-62

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 79-62 triumph over the Providence College Friars in the final round of the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational.
Junior guard Anthony James led the way with 22 points, while freshman forward Seth Tuttle posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jake Koch also joined James and Tuttle in double-figure scoring with 13 points on the night.
James was named the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational MVP. UNI's Koch and Johnny Moran were also named to the All-Tournament team.
Providence scored the first points of game - a 3-pointer from Vincent Council - prior to the Panthers scoring the game's next 10 points and never trailing. UNI opened up a 19-7 lead 11 minutes into the game with a suffocating defense.
Sophomore guard Matt Morrison's 3-pointer with 2:43 left in the half gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the first half at 33-18. It was Morrison's second 3-pointer of the half. Morrison came into the game having not scored this season.
Providence cut the Panther lead to six at 40-34 with just over 15 minutes left in the game. But the Panthers responded with an 11-2 run to push the lead 15 points at 51-36.
James drained a 3-pointer with just under three minutes to go to put UNI on top 76-57, for a 19-point bulge - UNI's largest lead of the night.
NOTES: Both UNI and Iowa State both posted perfect 4-0 records in the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational ... UNI and Iowa State will meet Wednesday in Ames at Hilton Coliseum with a tip slated for 7 p.m. ... UNI moved to 5-1 on the year, which marks the fourth time in head coach Ben Jacobson's tenure that the Panthers have begun a season at 5-1 ... it marked the first time in the history of UNI basketball that the Panthers were able to record a victory over a BIG EAST conference school ... UNI is now 1-9 all-time vs. the BIG EAST ... UNI made nine 3-pointers to only three for the Friars ... UNI only turned the ball over seven times on the night.
