CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team held the Western Carolina Catamounts in check on Tuesday in the McLeod Center as the Panthers posted a 59-39 triumph. The game is a part of the South Padre Island Invitational.
The 39 points if the fewest allowed by a Panther team since a 59-39 win over Indiana State in the 2002-03 season.
"I was pleased with our activity level tonight," UNI head coach Ben Jacobson said. "We weren't just standing around. I liked our defensive effort and defensive performance tonight."
The Panthers' Jake Koch had a balanced effort as he scored nine points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked four shots, tallied three steals and handed out three assists.
"Jake has the ability to impact a game without all the scoring," Jacobson said. "With his kind of size, we are able to move him around and he's extremely valuable. He doesn't have to score to have an impact on a game."
UNI freshman Seth Tuttle scored a career-high 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor.
"I thought Seth was a lot more active tonight," Jacobson said. "As it happens with freshmen, sometimes they think so much. Tonight he was reacting and making plays."
The Panthers used a 15-0 run from the 3:18 of the first half until the 15:19 mark of the second half to turn a 24-17 lead into a 39-17 bulge. The Panthers eventually pushed the lead to 35 points at 59-24 with 7:23 left in the game.
The Catamounts closed the game on a 15-0 run as the Panthers failed to score in the final 7:23 of the second half.
WCU was led by Harouna Mutombo's game-high 21 points.
UNI will travel to South Padre Island and will matchup with Rice on Friday at 5 p.m. UNI will then take on Providence on Saturday at 9 p.m. The UNI-Providence game will be televised live on CBS College Sports. Both games will be broadcast live on the radio via the Panthers Sports Radio Network with Gary Rima (play-by-play) and Kevin Boyle (analyst) handling the call.
