
No. 12 Panthers Rally For 3-2 Win At Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The No. 12 University of Northern Iowa volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 win at Missouri State in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday, extending its MVC win streak to 48. UNI won the match by scores of 24-26, 22-25, 25-21, 25-11 and 15-12.
Bre Payton notched her third triple-double of the year, racking up 15 kills, 47 assists and 10 digs. Amy Braun notched her first career triple-double, tallying 13 kills, 10 assists and 25 digs. Megan Lehman also finished with 15 kills for the Panthers (23-1, 12-0 MVC), and Shelby Kintzel and Krista DeGeest each finished with nine kills and eight blocks.
Olivia Brand led MSU (15-7, 8-3 MVC) with 18 kills, and Karen Rivatto finished with 16.
Missouri State racked up 20 kills and hit .212 in the first set to claim a 26-24 win over the Panthers. UNI trailed 24-21 in the set, but scored three straight points to tie the set at 24-24. MSU responded with two straight points to take the 26-24 win.
The Bears jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set, and they led by as many as seven points before the Panthers chipped away to pull within one, 21-20. The teams traded points to keep the difference at one, 22-21, but MSU scored two straight points to bring up set point, 24-21. A kill from Payton held off the Bears for a point, but a UNI service error ended the set in a 25-22 win for MSU.
UNI took an early 5-2 lead in the third set and never trailed, taking a 25-21 win to keep the match alive.
The Panthers rolled in set four, racking up 16 kills to just one error to tally a .714 attack percentage in the set. UNI held MSU to .056 hitting in the frame, taking a 25-11 win and forcing a fifth set.
MSU scored the first two points in the fifth set, but a kill from Lehman and a block from Kintzel tied the set at 2-2. The teams were tied again at 3-3 and 4-4, then UNI scored back-to-back points to build a 6-4 lead. The UNI lead stayed between one and two points until a kill from Lehman and a block from Payton put the Panthers in front 10-6. Missouri State scored consecutive points to pull within a pair, 10-8. The UNI lead alternated between two and three points, and a kill from Kintzel brought up match point, 14-11. MSU held off the Panthers for a point, but Braun put down a kill to give the Panthers the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
The Panthers finished with a .267 attack percentage, and Missouri State hit .177. The Panthers recorded 20.0 team blocks, compared to 8.5 for MSU.
The win is UNI's 14th straight, and it is the fourth time this season UNI has rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim the win.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play at Wichita State.
