
No. 12 Panthers Top Drake 3-1

DES MOINES, Iowa - Three Panthers notched double-digit kills to lead the No. 12 University of Northern Iowa volleyball team past Drake 3-1 in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night in the Knapp Center. UNI won by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-23.
Megan Lehman led UNI (18-1, 8-0 MVC) with 14 kills, and Amy Braun and Shelby Kintzel each finished with 10. Bre Payton finished one kill shy of a triple-double, notching 41 assists, 13 digs and nine kills in the match. Candice Burke led UNI with 28 digs, and Kintzel and Michelle Burow each finished with six blocks.
UNI led just 15-14 in the first set before rattling off six straight points to build a 21-15 advantage. After Drake (6-14, 2-6 MVC) scored a point to end the run, the Panthers scored three straight to bring up set point, 24-16. The Bulldogs held the Panthers off for three points, but a kill from Kintzel ended the set with a 25-19 UNI win.
The teams traded leads twice and were in three ties in the second set, including at 17-17. Drake used a 6-1 run to build a 23-18 lead, and the Panthers were never able to close the gap to closer than three from that point, falling 25-21.
UNI jumped out to a 5-1 lead and never looked back in the third set, leading by at least two and as many as nine on the way to a 25-16 win.
The Panthers built a 7-1 lead in the fourth set. After Drake cut the UNI lead to five, 9-4, the Panthers scored five straight points to build a double-digit advantage, 14-4. The Bulldogs chipped away at the UNI lead, eventually closing the gap to one, 22-21. The Panthers used a kill from Braun and a block from Burow and Lehman to bring up match point, 24-21. The Bulldogs held UNI off for two points, but Lehman put down a kill to end the set 25-23 and the match 3-1 in favor of UNI.
The Panthers finished with a .168 attack percentage in the match, while holding Drake to a .095 attack percentage. UNI and Drake each notched 10.0 blocks in the match.
UNI returns to action on Saturday when it plays at Creighton.
