
No. 12 Panthers Sweep Creighton For 45th-Straight MVC Win

OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 12 University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated Creighton 3-0 to extend its Missouri Valley Conference win streak to 45 Saturday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. The Panthers (19-1, 9-0 MVC) took the match by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-12.
Amy Braun led UNI with 17 kills, matching a career high, along with a team-high14 digs. Michelle Burow finished with 10 kills for the Panthers. Krista DeGeest tallied four blocks, and Bre Payton notched 34 assists. Jenny Willms and Candice Burke each collected 12 digs.
Karisa Almgren led Creighton (11-10, 6-3 MVC) with nine kills.
After falling behind 4-0 in the first set, UNI came back to tie the set at 5-5. The Panthers used a 5-0 run to turn an 8-6 deficit to an 11-8 lead. Creighton responded with a 6-1 run of its own, reclaiming the lead at 14-12. The teams were tied at 14-14, 15-15 and 16-16 before Creighton scored three straight to take a 19-16 lead. With Creighton leading 21-19, UNI scored five straight points to take a 24-21 lead and bring up set point. The Bluejays held off the Panthers for a point, but a kill by Burow gave the Panthers the 25-22 win in the set.
Set two featured four lead changes and eight ties, including at 23-23. Braun finished back-to-back kills to give the set to UNI, 25-23.
Creighton scored the first two points in the third set, but the Panthers responded with seven straight points, including a pair of aces from Jenny Willms, to give UNI a 7-2 edge. UNI led by at least three and as many as 13 on the way to a 25-12 win in the set and a 3-0 win in the match. The Panthers held Creighton to .083 hitting in the final set, while posting a .324 attack percentage in the frame.
UNI hit .256 in the match, compared to .140 for Creighton. The Panthers tallied 8.0 blocks, while the Bluejays finished with 6.0.
The Panthers return to action on Monday when they host North Dakota State in a non-conference matchup.
