Panthers Defeated by Hawkeyes in Season Opener

Waterloo, Ia.- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team had a tough start to the season with a 6-1 loss to the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Lara Okicki were defeated in the No. 1 doubles match by Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young of Iowa 8-5. In the No. 2 doubles match, Jessica Kunzelmann and Kristy Lankelma fell to the Iowa team of Jessica Cohen and Alexis Dorr 8-6. The team of Chelsea Moore and Katy Delagardelle were defeated by Lynne Poggensee-Wei and Tina Hanazin 8-4 in the No.3 doubles match.
In the No. 1 singles, Gonzalez fell to Iowa's Molnar 6-7, 6-4, (10-6). Newcomer Lara Okicki was defeated by Young of the Hawkeyes 6-1, 6-2 in the No.2 singles. Kunzelmann had the lone win for the Panthers, defeating Poggensee-Wei 6-2, 6-1 in the No.3 match. In the No. 4 singles match, Lankelma fell to Dorr of Iowa 6-1, 6-4. Moore was defeated in the No. 5 match to Iowa's Cohen 6-3, 6-0. Delagardelle fell to Hanazin 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles.
“It was a tough loss, but it was a good start for us, especially against such a solid team like Iowa. A couple of points here and there and some of the matches could have gone differently.” said Head Coach Sachin Kirtane.
The Panthers return to the court February 4th at home where they will be taking on the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
