First-Place Panthers Power Past Purple Aces, 69-37

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team scored the first nine points against Evansville and never looked back in a 69-37 win over the Purple Aces Friday night in the McLeod Center, the Panthers' fifth straight victory. Evansville's 37 points are the fewest the Panthers have ever allowed in Missouri Valley Conference action and the fewest against anyone since UNI topped Detroit 62-35 in 2007.

K.K. Armstrong led UNI (13-5, 6-1 MVC) with 13 points, and she also dished our four assists. Katelin Oney and Rachel Madrigal each scored 12 points, and Amber Kirschbaum notched her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Jacqui Kalin finished with eight points, eight rebounds and five assists for UNI.

Briyana Blair led the Purple Aces (7-10, 2-4 MVC) with eight points.

The Panthers held Evansville without a field goal for the first five minutes of action, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. An Aces three cut the UNI lead to 9-4, but the Panthers went on a 13-2 run over the next seven minutes to build a 22-6 advantage with 7:05 left in the first half.

Evansville managed to trim the UNI lead to 10, 25-15, but UNI ended the half on a 6-0 run to take a 31-15 lead into the break.

UNI carried the run over into the second half, scoring the first eight points of the second period to extend its lead to 39-15 with 16:19 remaining.

The Panthers led by at least 21 points the rest of the way, and UNI led by as many as 34 points in the victory.

UNI shot 25-of-60 (41.7 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers finished 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) from the free-throw line.

Evansville shot 13-of-52 (25.0 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-18 (18.8 percent) from three-point range. The Purple Aces were 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

UNI turned Evansville's 25 turnovers into 25 points. The Purple Aces converted UNI's 17 turnovers into 10 points.

UNI held a 45-34 rebounding advantage. The Panthers grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, resulting in 20 second-chance points. UE scored 10 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds.

The Panthers look to remain in first place in the MVC standings when they host Southern Illinois on Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
