AMES, Iowa - The No. 18-ranked University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball team fell to No. 11-ranked Iowa State Wednesday evening. Set scores were 16-25, 20-25, 22-25.
Michelle Burow led the Panthers on the offensive end, knocking down nine kills. Krista DeGeest added eight while Bre Payton finished with six. Defensively, Ellie Blankenship snagged 11 digs while Payton grabbed nine.
Iowa State jumped to an early lead in set one, going on an 8-1 run to build an 18-10 lead before UNI closed the gap to six at 19-12. That would be as close as the Panthers could get in the first set, as the Cyclones built their lead to as many as ten before taking set one, 25-16.
In set two, UNI built a three point lead at 8-5 before the Cyclones tied it at 10-10. Neither team managed to gain an advantage until ISU took the lead at 14-13. The Cyclones built their lead to as many as five before eventually taking the set 25-20.
The Panthers looked to have control in set three, building as many as a five point lead throughout the set. Kills from Payton and Burow followed by a block gave UNI an early 5-3 lead. The Panthers built their lead to as many as four before ISU tied the set at 7-7. UNI extended their lead to five at 19-4 before ISU closed the gap to tie it at 19. ISU took its first lead of the game at 22-21 and never looked back, eventually taking the set 25-22.
UNI (5-2) heads to the Kansas Invitational this weekend. The Panthers will face Arkansas-Little Rock, Kansas and Winthrop over the two-day tournament.
