No. 18 Panthers Down Kansas in Five Sets

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 18-ranked University of Northern Iowa women's volleyball team picked up a win over host Kansas in five sets at the Kansas Invitational Friday evening. Set scores were 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 15-11.
UNI finished with three players reaching double-digit kill numbers as Amy Braun led the way with 12 kills followed by Michelle Burow and Beth Discher with 11 apiece. Defensively, Ellie Blankenship finished with 27 digs while Braun added 14 and Bre Payton finished with 10.
The Panthers dominated the first set, building as many as a ten point lead before taking the set, 25-16. The Panthers registered 13 kills while holding the Jayhawks to just eight.
Burow and Braun led the Panther offense with four and three kills, respectively.
UNI jumped to an early 6-2 lead in set two before Kansas cut the lead to two at 9-7. The Jayhawks tied the set at 10-10 and neither team managed to gain an advantage before UNI built a three point lead at 19-16 off back-to-back blocks from DeGeest. Kills from DeGeest and Shelby Kintzel gave UNI a 21-18 lead but two Panther errors cut the UNI lead to one. UNI maintained its composure and rattled off four straight points to take the set, 25-20.
After building a 6-3 lead in set three, Kansas came thundering back to tie the set at six all. UNI then rattled off five straight points to build an 11-6 lead. UNI continued to maintain at least a two point lead until the Jayhawks cut the Panther lead to one at 23-22. KU then took the lead off a kill from Karina Garlington and a Panther attack error. Garlington sealed the set win for the Jayhawks with a kill to give KU a 25-23 set win.
Kansas jumped to an early 8-2 lead in the fourth set before UNI closed the gap to three at 8-5. The Jayhawks continued to roll; building as many as six point lead before UNI came back to cut the KU lead to three again at 20-17. The Jayhawks held strong, taking the set 25-20 and forcing a fifth set.
The Panthers gained an early lead on the Jayhawks in set five and never looked back as UNI built a 5-2 lead before Kansas closed within one at 5-4. UNI held the lead until the Jayhawks tied the set at 9-9. A KU attack error followed by a block from DeGeest and Kintzel gave UNI a two point lead and the Panthers held strong, taking the set 15-11.
The Panthers (7-2) will wrap-up competition at the Kansas Invitational Saturday morning, taking on Winthrop.
