AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Cyclones took advantage of five University of Northern Iowa turnovers in a 27-0 victory at Jack Trice Stadium.
It marked the first time since Sept. 4, 2004, that the Panthers were shut out. Iowa State also scored that shut out with a 23-0 win over the Panthers.
UNI fell to 1-2 on the season, while Iowa State evened its mark at 2-2.
UNI drove the ball 36 yards on its opening possession of the game, but had a 40-yard field goal from Billy Hallgren blocked.
The Cyclones took over after the blocked kick and appeared ready to go 3-and-out, but a pass interference call on third down extended the Cyclone drive. Iowa State used the second chance to score a field goal of its own - a 37-yarder from Grant Mahoney with 4:52 left in the first quarter.
UNI's Carlos Anderson fumbled near mid-field on the ensuing possession, which was recovered by ISU's A.J. Klein at the Panthers' 46-yard line. The Cyclones converted the Panther miscue into a 46-yard field goal by Mahoney to open up a 6-0 lead with 14:04 left in the second quarter.
ISU upped the margin to 13-0 on a 6-yard touchdown run by Alexander Robinson with 57 seconds left in the first half. ISU used a bit of trickery on the drive when on a field goal attempt, the Cyclones' kicker Grant Mahoney took a pitch for a five-yard run on a 4th-and-4 at the UNI 24-yard line.
The Panthers began the second half behind signal caller Zach Davis and marched the ball into the redzone. However an interception by ISU's Jeremy Reeves was returned 94 yards for a touchdown to give the Cyclones a 20-0 lead with 12:30 left in the third quarter.
The Cyclones added their second interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter when A.J. Klein returned a Terrell Rennie pass 25 yards for a score. Klein's pick gave ISU a 27-0 lead with 1:18 remaining in the third stanza.
UNI had one final chance to put points on the board, but a Rennie fumble at the one-yard line was recovered by the Cyclones in the endzone with 1:31 left in the game.
UNI turned the ball over five times on the day - three interceptions and two fumbles.
Rennie led the Panther rushing attack with 80 yards on 24 carries. Rennie also passed for 102 yards on 6-of-13 passing, including a long of 42 yards to Maurice Turner. Turner led the Panthers in receiving yards with 49 on the day. Shawn Gerard and Andre Martin tied for team-high honors in tackles with seven each. Gerard also added a quarterback sack.
The Panthers will be back in action next Saturday at the UNI-Dome against South Dakota State at 4 p.m.
