UNI Notches 24-14 Win Over South Dakota State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa came up with a win in front of the family weekend crowd of 14,686. The Panthers topped the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 24-14.
In the first quarter, the Panthers drove to the Jackrabbits 35 yard-line and Billy Hallgren attempted a 45 yard field goal, but it sailed wide right.
In the second quarter, the Jackrabbits attempted a 41-yard field goal. The kick was good, but SDSU was flagged for an illegal formation. Kicker Kyle Harris re-kicked from the 46 yard line, but UNI's Varmah Sonie blocked the kick. The game remained scoreless following the block.
The Panthers then took over on their own-29 yard line. On the first play, Tirrell Rennie rushed for 65-yards to bring the Panthers to the 6-yard line. Carlos Anderson rushed for 5 more yards to just inside the 1-yard line. Then Rennie rushed the last yard for the Panthers' first touchdown of the game.
In the third quarter, SDSU's quarterback Thomas O'Brian completed a 9-yard pass to Tyrel Kool for the Jackrabbits first touchdown. The extra point was good. The score was tied 7-7.
With 6:10 remaining in the third quarter, Rennie ran for an 8-yard touchdown. The extra point by Hallgren was good to give the Panthes the lead for good at 14-7. In the fourth quarter, Hallgren attempted a 43-yard field goal. The kick was good and the Panthers increased the lead to 17-7.
With 2:30 left in the fourth, the Jackrabbits found the endzone again on a 5-yard touchdown strike from Thomas O'Brien to Colin Cochart. The Jacks then attempted an onside kick but it went out of bounds to give the ball to the Panthers at the 45-yard line.
Two plays later the Panthers put the game on ice on a 44-yard touchdown strike from Rennie to Schuylar Oordt, who jumped over two defenders to grab the score. Hallgren added the extra point to give UNI a comfortable 24-14 advantage.
UNI's offense was led by a pair of 100-yard rushers in Carlos Anderson (136 yards) and Rennie (121 yards). Oordt led the Panther receiving corps with five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Jamar Thompson led the squad in tackles with 11 stops.
Next weekend, the Panthers will head to Carbondale, Ill. to take on the Salukis of Southern Illinois. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
NOTES: The Panthers entered the game minus-8 in turnover margin (ranked No. 116 in the nation), but the Panthers forced four Jackrabbit turnovers for a plus-3 margin in the day ... Billy Hallgren added five points in the game to up his career total to 303 points ... Brian Wingert holds the career scoring mark with 331 points ... UNI is 2-0 in the MVFC and is tied with Western Illinois for first place in the MVFC standings.
