Cedar Falls, IOWA - The UNI women's tennis team started off its own UNI Fall Invitational with victories in all flights, including singles and doubles.
Senior Laia Gonzalez-Garrido started off the day by defeating South Dakota's Veronika Makashov 6-0, 6-1 in the Platinum Flight singles. She is set to face Mallory Weber of Missouri in tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Junior Phoebe Walker beat Bryna Nasenbeny of South Dakota State 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of the Platinum Flight singles today. She will face North Dakota's Erin Kappers tomorrow morning in the quarterfinals.
Junior Jessica Kunzelmann cruised by South Dakota State's Megan McDougal 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the Gold Flight singles. She faces Jessica Labarte of Drake in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Freshman Chelsea Moore won by default in the first round of the Gold Flight singles, and she automatically moves on to face Mariana Splica of Minnesota in the second round tomorrow.
Freshman Krissy Lankelma won in the first round of the Silver Flight singles. She beat Brooke Henry of South Dakota State 6-2, 6-0 and goes on to face Megan Gow of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tomorrow.
In the Bronze Flight singles, senior Katy Delagardelle won her first round match against Katie Elifson of South Dakota State 6-2, 6-0. She then went on to defeat South Dakota's Maddie Warder 6-4, 7-6. She will compete in the quarterfinals against Emma Waites of Iowa State.
Laia Gonzalez-Garrido won their first round match against Ganser/Donovan of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 8-2 in the Platinum Flight doubles. They also went on the beat Northern Illinois' Friedland/McLaughlin 8-3. They will face Ritchie/Weber of Missouri tomorrow in the semifinals.
Jessica Kunzelmann and Chelsea Moore had a bye in their first round match, so they automatically moved on to the second round of the Gold Flight doubles. They defeated Iowa State's Nixon/Waites in the second round and will move on to face Steffania Sampaio (UNI)/Majercik (Iowa) in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Also in the Gold Flights singles, Katy Delagardelle and Krissy Lankelma defeated their first round matchup of Warden/Foster of South Dakota 8-2. In the second round, Delagardelle and Laneklma were defeated by Koenen/Modesto of Missouri 8-2.
UNI head coach Sachin Kirtane was impressed by the performance of his players.
"We played well today, even in the windy conditions," Kirtane said. "We have some tough matches tomorrow, so we have to come back out and play our best on Saturday."
The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow at Byrnes Park starting at 9:00 a.m. If it rains, play would move to the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo.
