CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The 10th-ranked University of Northern Iowa football team fell on the short end of a 22-20 decision to No. 11 Stephen F. Austin Saturday afternoon in the UNI-Dome.
Just 18 seconds into the game, junior quarterback Tirrell Rennie took the Panthers' first play from scrimmage for 75-yards and a UNI touchdown. The extra point was no good, making the score 6-0.
With 6:36 left in the first quarter, Stephen F. Austin scored on a 13-yard pass from Jeremy Moses to Kris Lott. The extra point was good to put the Lumberjacks up 7-6.
After an illegal formation on the kick-off, UNI received the ball on its 13 yard line. Shortly after, Rennie was sacked in the end zone for a safety, putting the Lumberjacks ahead, 9-6.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Travis Walker capped a 55-yard drive with a one-yard run for an SFA touchdown. The Lumberjacks fumbled the extra point, giving SFA a 15-6 lead.
Billy Hallgren converted the extra point to cut the Lumberjacks' lead to 15-13.
With 3:13 left in the first half, Rennie completed an 83-yard pass to Jarred Herring for a Panther touchdown. Hallgren's extra point was good, putting the Panthers up 20-15.
The Lumberjacks answered with a one-yard touchdown run from Romonte Hampton with 41 seconds left in the second half, giving SFA a 22-10 lead at the break.
UNI's Zach Davis came in at the end of the third quarter after Rennie left the game with an injury. Davis helped drive the Panthers to the SFA 19-yard line, but a fumble at the 19 returned the ball to the Lumberjacks.
SFA took over on its own 20-yard line. The UNI defense forced a three-and-out. The Panthers drove back into the red zone, but the Lumberjacks' Josh Aubrey forced a fumble at the 10, and SFA recovered.
The UNI defense forced a punt, and the Panthers took over on their own 28 with 3:50 on the clock. UNI was only able to move the ball 10 yards, however, and the Panthers' fourth-and-15 attempt from their own 38 dropped incomplete. SFA took over on downs and was able to run out the clock.
Rennie rushed for 132 yards on the night, and Anderson finished with 81 yards rushing. The Panther defense held the Lumberjacks to 79 rushing yards. Jamar Thompson lead the team with 15 tackles.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they face in-state foe Iowa State in Ames. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Jack Trice Stadium.
NOTES:
Carlos Anderson returned a 99-yard kickoff for a touchdown. The last time the Panthers returned a kickoff for a touchdown was when Jarred Herring returned the opening kick-off for an 88-yard touchdown last season.
