Panthers Sweep South Dakota State in West Gym

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The West Gym picked up its 190th volleyball victory tonight as the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team swept South Dakota State. The throwback match marked the first match in the West Gym since the 2006 season. UNI is an impresive 190-12 in the building since 1990.
Set scores were 25-13, 25-20, 25-17.
The Panthers had three players with double-digit kills with Beth Discher leading the attack with 12 followed by Krista DeGeest with 11 and Michelle Burow with 10. UNI hit .327 for the evening, including a blistering .483 in the first set.
On the defensive end, Ellie Blankenship, Amy Braun and Candice Burke helped the Panthers hold the Jackrabbits to just .117 hitting, with Blankenship grabbing a match-high 18 digs followed by Braun with 17 and Burke with 10.
Bre Payton dished out 42 assists for the Panthers in the win.
Following a 1-1 tie in set one the Panthers dominated the set, leading by as many as 12 before taking the 25-13 win. Burow and Discher paced the Panther attack, each knocking down five kills in the set.
The Jackrabbits put up a fight in set two, building a two point lead on the Panthers at 11-9. Three consecutive kills from the Panthers put UNI up 12-11, giving them their first lead of the set. UNI would not relinquish its lead, eventually taking the set 25-20. DeGeest and Discher led the offensive attack for the second set, each hammering down five kills.
After a back-and-forth battle early, SDSU built a three point lead at 7-4. UNI managed to regain the lead at 11-10 and never looked back, building as many as an eight point lead before taking the set 25-17. Shelby Kintzel powered the Panther offense in the third set, knocking down seven kills.
UNI (15-2, 6-0 Missouri Valley) returns to the McLeod Center Friday evening to face MVC foe Bradley. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
