Panthers Lose a Pair at Southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team saw its six-game win streak snapped when it dropped a pair of contests at Southern Illinois in Missouri Valley Conference action Saturday afternoon. The Panthers (26-22, 11-10) were held to just two hits in the first game, one each by Megan Machovec. Jen Larsen was charged with the loss after giving up three earned runs through 2.2 innings. The Salukis (33-17, 17-4) used three singles and a walk to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. SIU built a 5-0 lead when three hits and two Panther errors resulted in three runs in the bottom of the third. Cristini Trapani hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to extend SIU's lead to 7-0. Alicia Garza hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to give SIU an 8-0 lead and end the game. UNI outhit the Salukis 5-2 in the second game, but the Salukis were the only team to plate a run, using a bases-loaded walk to score a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 win. Jen Larsen led the Panthers with a pair of hits. The Panthers left six runners on base, two of them in scoring position. Melissa Tillett gave up two hits and one run to be charged with the loss. The Panthers and Salukis wrap up the series on Sunday at noon.
