CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team won its fourth straight game with a 12-2 five-inning win over Evansville in Missouri Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon at Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex.
The Panthers collected 13 hits in the win, including two each from Jen Larsen and Dunker each hit home runs. Larsen's was the 29th of her career, tying the UNI career record set by Jody Dean in 1999.
Melissa Tillett allowed two runs on five hits through 4.0 innings to earn the win.
Alicia Betancur hit a two-out double off the wall in right center to score Amy Gaertner from first and give the Aces (15-28, 7-13) an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers (24-20, 11-8) were retired in order until Lindsey Callanan and Jen Larsen followed with a home run into right field to put the Panthers in front, 5-1.
Kim Wachholder reached on a fielder's choice. Eranne Daugharthy reached on a single, moving Wachholder to third. Daugharthy stole second, and when Evansville tried to throw her out, Wachholder beat the throw back to the plate to score. Lindsey Callanan doubled down the right field line, scoring Daugharthy and putting UNI in front, 7-1. Courtney Dunker followed with a two-run home run into left center to give UNI a 9-1 lead. Borschel reached on a single, but she was called out for leaving the base early to end the frame.
Evansville used a trio of singles to get a run back in the top of the fourth, making the score 9-2.
Megan Machovec led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, and Daigh followed with a single into right center. Machovec moved to third on the play, and Daigh advanced to second on the throw to give the Panthers runners on second and third with nobody out. Larsen hit a sacrifice fly into right, scoring Machovec. Abney singled up the middle to score Daigh, and Daugharthy singled up the middle to score Whitney Plein, who was running for Abney, and give UNI a 12-2 advantage.
The Aces put two runners on in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers held them without a run to complete the run-rule victory.
