
Panthers Win Two Against Evansville

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team picked up a pair of Missouri Valley Conference wins on Saturday, topping Evansville 10-6 and 9-0 at the Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex.
Eranne Daugharthy finished the day a perfect 6-of-6 from the plate on the day, including a three-run home run and a double.
Daugharty led the Panthers (23-20, 10-8 MVC) with four hits and four RBIs in the first game. Megan Machovec finished with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Jen Larsen earned the win for the Panthers.
Megan Machovec hit a leadoff single into center in the bottom of the first. Jen Larsen drew a walk, and Kim Wachholder followed with a two-out single into left to score Machovec. Eranne Daugharthy connected for a home run into left center to extend UNI's lead to 4-0.
Krista Price hit a solo home run in the top of the second to put the Aces (15-27, 7-12) on the board. Amy Gaertner hit a two-run home run to center in the top of the third to pull Evansville within a run, 4-3.
Daugharthy and Lindsey Callanan each hit RBI singles to give UNI a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, extending the Panther lead to 6-3.
Evansville scored another run in the top of the fourth, but Livi Abney matched it with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning to bring the score to 7-4 in favor of the Panthers.
The Panthers used four hits in the bottom of the fifth to tack on another pair of runs, building a 9-4 lead.
Evansville got those runs back in the top of the sixth, using a single and back-to-back doubles to score two two-out runs and bring the score to 9-6.
Jaye Hutcheson hit a home run off the scoreboard in left center with two out in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 10-6, which would go on to be the final.
Wachholder, Daugharthy and Larsen each tallied two hits in the second game. Melissa Tillett gave up just one hit through five scoreless innings to earn the victory.
Evansville was threatening to score in the top of the second of game two, putting runners on first and second with one out. Lindsay Callanan made a diving catch in left to rob Kelci Alsip of an extra-base hit, and she doubled up the runner at second to end the inning.
The Panthers racked up 10 hits in the bottom of the second, tallying nine runs. Four of those hits came for extra bases, including a solo home run from Wachholder, a three-run home run from Courtney Dunker and doubles from Abney and Daugharthy.
Tillett held the Aces without a hit throught the next three innings, giving the Panthers a 9-0 five-inning win.
UNI and Evansville conclude their series on Sunday at noon.
