Panthers Cruise Past Purple Aces at MVC Championships

Wichita, Kansas - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team rolled past Evansville, 4-2 in the quarterfinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament today. The Panthers will now play No. 1 Wichita State who beat out Bradley 4-0 earlier today.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Purple Aces after winning the doubles point. UNI's Laia Gonzalez-Garrido teamed up to top Kate Chybowski and Theadora Kotsiou 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. Sampada Kanade and Ashton Schwerin.
UNI found success in the top half of singles competition to seal the deal for the Panthers, winning No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
UNI's Gonzalez-Garrido (No. 2) topped Theadora Kotsiou 6-3, 6-3. The Panther junior sports a 12-7 singles record for the spring.
Kanade won her No. 3 singles match against Ashton Schwerin, 6-3, 6-1. Kanade is 14-7 overall in singles competition during the spring.
Sophomore Jessica Kunzelmann secured the win as she beat out Pin Sorensen 6-4, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Kuzelmann improves to a team best 16-5 on the year.
"It was a really good win for us today, but now we have to prepare for a very good Wichita State Team," said Sachin Kirtane.
The Panthers now turn their attention to No. 1 Wichita State. UNI takes on the Shockers tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the MVC Championships semifinal match.
