Redbirds Top the Panthers 5-2

Waterloo - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team (10-9, 3-3) fell to the Illinois State Redbirds (15-5, 5-1) 5-2 today. The loss drops the Panthers back to .500 in conference play, while the Redbirds improve to 5-1.
The Panthers had a rough start as they were unable to claim the doubles point. The duo of Laia Gonzalez-Garrido was the only doubles pair to win today posting an 8-5 victory over Illinois State's Franziska Steinhardt and Julia Zubkova in No. 1 doubles. Kanade and Kunzelmann were defeated 8-5 by the Illinois State's Lech and Maack. In No. 3 doubles, Esker and Peters topped Stefannia Sampaio and Katy Delagardelle 8-4.
In singles play, sophomore Phoebe Walker got the Panthers on the right track posting a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kiss in No. 1 singles. Gonzalez-Garrido followed the sophomore's lead defeating Steinhardt 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot. Unfortunately, Gonzalez and Walker were the only two Panthers to get wins today. Zubkova defeated Kanade 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot and Lech topped Kunzelmann 6-3, 6-4 in No. 4 singles. In No. 5 singles, Maack beat out Sampaio 6-0, 6-1 and Esker defeated Delagardelle 6-0, 6-0.
“It was a very hard fought match and we got beat by a very good Illinois State team. Now we have to bounce back and try to get a win against Bradley tomorrow,” said head coach, Sachin Kirtane.
UNI returns to the court tomorrow at noon at Burns Park in Waterloo as they take on the Bradley Braves.
