TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team split a pair of games in the second day of the DeMarini Arizona State Challenge, topping Idaho State 2-0 but dropping a 4-0 contest to Creighton.
Megan Machovec finished 3-of-4 with a run scored for the Panthers against Idaho State. Jen Larsen struck out five and gave up four hits to earn the win for UNI (9-5).
Machovec led off the game with a single, and Jen Larsen reached to load the bases, and Eranne Daugharthy followed with a single into right center to send home Machovec and give UNI a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, the Panthers took advantage of a hit and an error to put runners on second and third with one out. Daigh grounded out but scored Allison Galvin on the play, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
Larsen held ISU to just four baserunners from that point to secure the win for UNI.
The Panthers stranded seven runners in the loss to Creighton. Daugharthy finished 2-of-3 from the plate in that game. Melissa Tillett was charged with the loss for UNI, giving up three earned runs in 5.1 innings in the circle.
Creighton used three hits and a Panther error to score a pair of runs in the top of the first. Renae Sinkler hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to double CU's lead, 4-0.
The Panthers put two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but they were retired in order in the seventh to secure the win for the Bluejays.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they play UC Santa Barbara in the final day of the DeMarini Arizona State Classic.
