OMAHA, Neb. – Unseeded Jarion Beets earned the University of Northern Iowa's 114th wrestling medal today at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which now ranks the Panthers 10th all-time in NCAA Division I history. Beets claimed eighth place at 174 pounds Saturday morning.
Attempting to battle through a torn hip flexor muscle in the seventh place match, Beets faced a fellow unseeded wrestler in Pennsylvania's Scott Giffin. Giffin jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first period and registered another takedown and nearfall in the second period before Beets was forced to injury default out.
This marks Beets first All-America honor of his career. This is also the third consecutive season and ninth time since 2000 UNI has had at least one wrestler earn All-America honors.
Beets journey to the medal round started in the pigtail match at 174 pounds, topping Oklahoma's Jeff James. Beets then upset No. 5-seeded Scott Glasser from Minnesota in a decisive 14-7 decision. Beets continued to roll in the championship round, topping Michigan's Justin Zeerip 8-6. Nebraska's No.4-seeded Stephen Dwyer was the first wrestler to hand Beets a loss, a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals.
In the consolation rounds, Beets earned a 5-3 decision over Philip Moricone (Edinboro) before falling to Central Michigan's No.7-seeded Ben Bennett and eventually meeting Giffin in the seventh-place match.
Beets finishes the season with a record of 22-11.
