Panthers Sweep Coyotes

Waterloo, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team improved to 4-3 on the season after a 7-0 sweep over South Dakota at the Waterloo Blackhawk Tennis Club. The Coyotes fall to 1-6 after dropping the match against Northern Iowa. This is the first sweep for the Panthers in the 2010 spring season.
"This was a good solid win," UNI head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "We took care of business, but we still need to work on playing better to be ready for UMKC on Sunday."
The Panthers came out strong from the start earning the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles tandem of Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and sophomore Talia Jang-Stewart got things going for the Panthers with an 8-0 win over Melanie Rockne and Brittney Smith. Senior Sampada Kanade and sophomore Jessica Kunzelmann teamed up for a dominant 8-4 win over Nunez and Kiefer of SDU in No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Phoebe Walker and Stefannia Sampaio completed the Panthers double sweep with a 8-3 win over Janea Hagen and Rijalda Zejnic in the No. 3 doubles spot.
The Panthers continued its early success onto the singles play as all six Panthers cruised past their Coyote opponent. Sophomore Laia Gonzalez-Garrido rolled in the No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Rockne. The only senior, Sampada Kanade, got another victory as she beat out Zejnic 6-1, 6-3 in No. 3 singles. In the No. 4 singles, Jessica Kunzelmann defeated Isabel Nunez 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Stefannia Sampaio topped SDU's Brittney Smith 6-4, 6-0. Katy Delagardelle finished the clean sweep as she cruised by Janea Hagen 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot.
UNI steps back onto the court tomorrow at 11 a.m. to take on UMKC at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
