Panthers Win Three Straight

The UNI women's tennis squad extended their winning streak to three games Sunday as they defeated Western Illinois University, 6-1. The Panthers (3-1) remain undefeated at the Black Hawk Tennis Club, completing match three of their four-match home stand.
The UNI Panthers got things off to the right path as they secured the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Sampada Kanada and sophomore Talia Jang-Stewart barely lost too Western Illinois' Marcela Brandao and Yana Meinert 8-7, (9-7). Sophomore Laia Gonzalez-Garrido teamed up for a dominant 8-1 win over Furlong and Baumer in No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Laia Gonzalez-Garrido topped the Leatherneck's Jill Furlong, 6-2, 6-4. Senior Sampada Kanade took care of business in No. 3 singles, winning, 6-2, 6-4, over Stephanie Baumer of WIU. Jessica Kunzelmann cruised past her opponent as well. The UNI sophomore defeated Kate Kennedy, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot. Stefannia Sampaio was edged out by WIU's Yana Meinert 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 position. In No. 6 singles, Katy Delagardelle got her first singles win as a Panther as she beat Claire Griffin 7-5, 6-2.
“I'm really proud of the way our team played this entire weekend. It was great for us to come out and get three solid wins. Now we have to get ready to play a very good Iowa State team this week,” said Sachin Kirtane.
UNI will look to complete their four-match home stand with a flawless record on Wednesday. The Panthers will meet the Iowa State Cyclones at 1 PM.
