MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers scored a 65-63 victory over the University of Northern Iowa Panthers on Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
Milwaukee's Tone Boyle sank a 15-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left to provide the winning margin in the game.
UNI trailed by as many as 10 points in the game but tied the contest at 63-63 with 16.3 seconds left in the game on a pair of free throws from Kerwin Dunham.
"Defensively, we did a better job in the last 10-11 minutes of the game," UNI head coach Ben Jacobson said. "We were in position to win a game on the road against a good team. We finally got 2-3 defensive stops that we needed and executed on a couple of 3-point shots down the stretch. I thought we fought and scrapped to get it tied."
UNI junior guard Johnny Moran hit a 3-pointer with 3:04 to go in the game that cut the Milwaukee lead to 59-56.
"It was tough to come back from that margin," Moran said. "But we executed defensively in the second half and played hard. That's a positive. The last 10 minutes we really played hard."
Dunham hit a clutch 3-pointer with 2:06 to go in the game that trimmed the Milwaukee margin to two at 61-59. Moran then tipped a pass and caused a steal, allowing sophomore guard Anthony James to race in for a layup to knot the game at 61-61 with 1:49 remaining in the game.
Milwaukee's Kaylon Williams missed a 3-pointer and then Moran's twisting layup on the other end rattled out of the rim. UNI senior Lucas O'Rear committed a foul on the rebound and Milwaukee's Ryan Allen made one of two free throws to give UWM a one-point lead.
Kwadzo Ahelegbe was whistled for his fifth foul of the game on a charge with 19 seconds left. Williams was fouled but only made one free throw. Dunham was fouled on the rebound and tied the game at the line with 16 seconds left, setting the stage for Boyle's final heroics.
Ahelegbe led the Panthers in scoring with 14 points. O'Rear added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. Freshman Chip Rank, a native of Cedarburg, Wis., contributed with nine points and four rebounds.
UNI falls to 1-2 overall, while Milwaukee improves to 3-2 on the year.
UNI will play North Dakota at home on Sat., Nov. 27, at 8 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
