CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - On a night when the University of Northern Iowa unveiled its Sweet 16 banner, this year's Panther basketball team put on a banner effort against the Coe College Kohawks en route to an 84-45 victory in the McLeod Center.
The 39-point victory margin tied for the 12th-highest mark in school history. The Panthers set a McLeod Center record with 50 rebounds in the game - eclipsing the previous best of 49 set two times prior (vs. Wartburg, 12/15/07; vs. Creighton, 2/8/09).
UNI was led in scoring by sophomore guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe (11) and sophomore Jake Koch (10).
Coe knotted the game at 2-2 on a jumper from Dan Borngraeber with 18:04 left in the game - that would be the final tie of the game. UNI responded with a 10-0 run that was concluded with a pair of buckets from James.
A Kwadzo Ahelegbe 3-pointer with 6:31 left in the half capped an 11-0 run that gave UNI a 29-8 bulge. The Panthers expanded the lead to 25 points at 36-11 following another jumper from Ahelegbe with 2:52 left in the half. Junior Johnny Moran buried a triple with 21.5 seconds left in the first half to push the lead to 43-17 - the halftime score.
Following a Kevin Gaster 3-pointer for Coe with 18:50 left in the game, UNI went on a 17-0 spurt to take a 62-20 lead and never looked back. The Panthers eventually elevated the margin to 48 points at 75-27 with 7:19 remaining.
UNI (1-1 overall) will travel to Wisconsin-Milwaukee to take on another set of Panthers on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the U.S. Cellular Center.
NOTES: UNI's bench scoring (45) equaled the Coe team total (45) ... the Panthers shot 50.8 percent from the field and held Coe to 28.8 percent shooting.
