
Panthers Break Through in MVC Play, Top Illinois State 1-0

NORMAL, Ill. -- The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team knocked off Illinois State -- the preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorites -- with a 1-0 road victory on Friday afternoon in Normal, Ill.
Senior forward Chelsie Hochstedler scored for UNI in the 69th minute off a Morgan Olsen corner kick. Junior Kala Negus earned an assist on the play, along with Olsen.
The Panthers were outshot, 25-10, but received solid goalkeeping from junior Lauren Potzman. Potzman registered eight saves, including seven before halftime, and recorded her second shutout of the season.
UNI (3-9-2, 1-2-0 MVC) earned its first conference win since Oct. 21, 2007, when the Panthers topped Indiana State, 3-0. The win was also UNI's third of the season, surpassing its win total from 2009.
UNI has now posted four shutouts in its last eight matches, with two each by Potzman and freshman Erin Zaideman.
Nicole Ferlito recorded four shots in the contest to lead UNI.
Illinois State (5-6-0, 1-1-0 MVC) got seven shots from Rachel Bostick and three shots on goal from Alyssa Schulz.
UNI will return to action against North Dakota in a home non-conference match on Sun., Oct. 10. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
