UNI Soccer Defeats North Dakota, 2-1

WATERLOO, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team won its second consecutive match, defeating the University of North Dakota, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
UNI opened the scoring with a goal by sophomore Kiki McClellan in the 41st minute. McClellan drove a shot from straight on outside of the box that found the back of the net. Melissa Hagan and Ashley Capone assisted on the goal.
The Panthers' second goal did not come until the 84th minute. Ashley Sill took a pass from Melissa Hagan and slipped a shot past North Dakota goalkeeper Monica Stierman. Ashley Capone also earned her second assist on the play.
North Dakota's Kelsey Zachman was able to score in the 85th minute, but UNI held on for the 2-1 victory.
UNI outshot the Fighting Sioux by a 16-13 margin overall and by an 8-5 margin in shots on goal.
Freshman Erin Zaideman earned the win in goal for the Panthers, registering four saves in the contest.
The 85th-minute goal by North Dakota ended a 314-minute stretch of soccer where UNI did not allow a goal.
UNI will return to action at Indiana State in a road conference match on Sun., Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Terre Haute, Ind.
