
Volleyball Opens MVC Play with 3-0 Sweep of Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team swept Drake 3-0 in its Missouri Valley Conference opener Friday night in the Knapp Center. UNI won 25-11, 25-16 and 25-13 to claim its eighth straight match, and the sweep gives UNI wins in its last 12 sets.
Shannon Aschoff and Bre Payton each had three blocks in the match, and Payton led the Panthers with 37 assists. The Panthers outhit Drake .414 to .119, giving UNI its highest attack percentage this season.
UNI (10-2, 1-0 MVC) took a 4-3 lead that it never surrendered in the first set, ending the period on a 14-4 run to win the set, 25-11.
The Panthers picked up where they left off in the second set, scoring four straight to break a 2-2 tie and build a 6-2 lead. UNI stretched its lead to 11-4, but Drake (9-4, 0-1 MVC) rallied to trim the Panther advantage to five, 13-8. The Panthers extended their advantage to 17-10, but Drake cut the UNI lead to four, 18-14. UNI outscored Drake 7-2 the rest of the way to claim the set, 25-16.
UNI jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the third set and never looked back, leading by as many as 12 and at least four on the way to a 25-13 win in the set.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play at Creighton.
