
Panthers Sweep Mavericks, 7-0

OMAHA, Neb.- The University of Northern Iowa Panthers earned victories in every singles match and won the doubles point Sunday to defeat the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks, 7-0. The win puts the Panthers (9-2) back on track after falling to the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 6-1, one day earlier. The win also marked head coach Sachin Kirtane's 83rd career coaching victory at UNI, which ties him for first all-time.
UNI Sophomore Diana Mendez and junior Sampada Kanade picked up an 8-4 win in the No 1 doubles slot, and Panther sophomore Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and freshman Talia Jang-Stewart and freshman Jessica Kunzelmann fell 8-6.
The Panthers rolled in singles play winning every match in straight sets. Gonzalez-Garrrido cruised over UNO's Rachel Faulk, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, and Phoebe Walker shutout her opponent Traci Moklestad, 6-0, 6-0. Kanade topped Heath Hottman, 6-2, 6-1 in her No. 3 match, while Kunzelmann defeated Samantha Thomas, 6-1, 6-1. Mendez picked up another Panther victory in the No. 5 spot over Mary Lausten, 6-2, 6-4. Jang-Stewart, in her 2009 debut, completed the Panther sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kelsie Olson.
The Panthers will head south to Louisiana for a three-match road trip Mar. 17-19. UNI faces New Orleans on Mar. 17, Southern on Mar. 18 and Southeastern Louisiana on Mar. 19.
