ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Senior 165-pounder Moza Fay moved two steps closer to a shot at a national title with two victories on Thursday at the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Championships. The Panthers are in 16th place following day one with 15 team points.
Fay advanced to Friday's quarterfinals and will take on No. 12-seed Jarrod King (Edinboro) for an opportunity to advance to the semifinals. The quarterfinals will be broadcast live on ESPNU beginning at 11 a.m. Friday's semifinals will also be broadcast live on ESPN2 and ESPNU at 7 p.m.
Four other Panthers remain alive in the wrestlebacks and will have an opportunity on Friday to attain All-America status. Alex Dolly (184 lbs.), Andrew Anderson (197 lbs.) and Christian Brantley (285 lbs.) will return to the Scottrade Center on Friday morning in the wrestlebacks.
Redshirt freshman Trent Washington (141 lbs.) was forced to default from the tournament after suffering a concussion in double-overtime of his quarterfinal matchup against Arizona State's No. 7-seed Chris Drouin.
Session III will get underway on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Scottrade Center.
Second Round - Thursday Night
Redshirt freshman Trent Washington (Omaha, Neb.) battled No. 7 seeded Chris Drouin (Arizona State) to double overtime before having to injury default with six seconds remaining. In the third tiebreaker Washington gave up a reversal with 22 seconds left to give Drouin a 4-2 lead. Washington escaped with 10 seconds left to make it 4-3. Washington then escaped to begin the fourth tiebreaker and tied the match at 4-4 with 27 seconds left, however Drouin had accrued 30 seconds of riding time, forcing Washington to have to secure a takedown to advance. Unfortunately, Washington dove low for a takedown and collided heads with Drouin. Washington used his entire allotment of injury time before he was forced to injury default to Drouin. Washington was feeling tingling in his hands. As a precaution, he was tended to by the medical staff and was carted off the mat.
Senior Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) used a reversal with one second left in the first period to propel him to a 10-3 victory over Boise State's Tyler Sherfey in the second round at 165 pounds. Fay trailed 3-2 in the final seconds of the first period and was able to tally a reversal to turn the score in his favor, 4-3. Fay then overpowered Sherfey in the final four minutes and racked up 3:02 of riding time to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday.
"I definitely had it in my head that I was going to score no matter what (at the end of the first)," Fay said. "I was looking for the escape but the reversal ended up being there. I felt like I wore him down. I just kept using my stuff and what the coaches have told me and it worked. I wanted a match today that would get my heart pumping. This definitely helps my confidence."
Senior Alex Dolly (Mishawaka, Ind.) ran into a buzzsaw in the form of No. 1-seeded Jake Herbert (Northwestern) in the second round at 184 pounds. Herbert, the NCAA champion in 2007 at this weight, racked up 5:10 of riding time en route to an 8-0 major decision over Dolly.
Wrestle-Backs - Thursday Night
Sophomore Trevor Kittleson (St. Ansgar, Iowa) scored a 2-1 tiebreaker victory over Chattanooga's Daniel Waddell in a wrestleback match at 149 pounds. Kittleson and Waddell each scored an escape in regulation to force the overtime at 1-1. Kittleson and Waddell were in a scramble at the end of the one-minute overtime period when Kittleson was awarded a takedown and an apparent victory with one second remaining. After the officials convened at the scorers' table, it was determined that the takedown was awarded before the buzzer. Chattanooga head coach Chris Bono protested the decision, and it was upheld so Kittleson and Waddell had to return to action after a 30-minute break. Kittleson was able to ride out Waddell during the first 30-second tiebreaker, Kittleson then escaped during Waddell's ride for the one-point win.
"I don't know what the controversy was, but I just came back to the warm-up area and relaxed and kept myself mentally prepared," Kittleson said. "It was a disadvantage because I know I had him tired out. I also knew I could ride him and get away though. My plan was to stand up, I knew he would grab my leg and then it was a matter of me kicking and moving away from him."
Senior Andrew Anderson (Sioux City, Iowa) kept his collegiate career underway with a 10-4 triumph over Millersville's Raymond Bennet in a 197-pound wrestleback. Anderson led 4-1 in the first period, but found himself in a battle as Bennet closed the gap to 4-3. But Anderson was able to take control with two more takedowns and added a riding time point for the 10-4 victory.
Redshirt freshman Christian Brantley (Homewood, Ill.) tallied a 15-7 major decision over VMI's Josh Vine. Brantley scored three first period takedowns to build a 6-2 lead en route to the major decision. Brantley added a key three-point nearfall in the third period to ensure the bonus point for the Panthers.
Preliminary Round - Thursday Morning
Trent Washington (Omaha, Neb.) scored his first NCAA tournament victory with a 5-2 win over No. 10-seeded Michael Thorn (Minnesota) in the first round of the 141-pound weight class. Washington got on the board with a takedown with 59 seconds left in the first period. Thorn escaped 12 seconds into the second period to pull within, 2-1. Washington started the third period down and tallied a reversal 29 seconds into the period. Thorn secured his second escape of the match with 1:03 to go, but Washington clinched the win by adding another point with 1:10 of riding time
Sophomore Trevor Kittleson (St. Ansgar, Iowa) matched up with No. 9-seeded Kyle Terry (Oklahoma) in the first round at 149 pounds. Terry scored a pair of first period takedowns to open up a 4-1 advantage following the first two minutes of action. Kittleson rode out Terry in the second period to keep the lead at three. But Terry added two more takedowns in the third period and Kittleson could only muster two escapes and dropped the bout by an 8-3 count.
No. 4-seeded Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa) began his march toward a national title at 165 pounds with a first-period fall over Oregon State's Keegan Davis. Fay caught Davis with a near-side cradle and earned the fall only 1:00 into the match.
"I saw (the near-side cradle) during the scramble," Fay said. "I never really did lock it up, but it was close enough."
Senior Alex Dolly (Mishawaka, Ind.) also made quick work in his first round match with a fall at the 2:37 mark against Indiana's Eric Cameron at 184 pounds. Dolly scored a takedown 15 seconds into the match and Cameron came back with an escape. However, Dolly locked up Cameron and secured the pin with 25 seconds left in the first period to advance to take on No. 1-seeded Jake Herbert (Northwestern) in the second round later tonight.
"It was junk, I got kind of lucky with the pin," Dolly said. "I knew I was probably going to get a takedown so I just held his ankle high and leaned back and got his shoulders on the mat."
Senior Andrew Anderson dropped a 5-3 decision to Cornell's Cameron Simez at 197 pounds. Anderson, the No. 11 seed at 197 pounds, got the first takedown of the match with 40 seconds left in the first period, but could only manage another escape the rest of the way. Simez rode Anderson out in the third period and racked up 2:32 in riding time for the match.
Redshirt freshman Christian Brantley came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Central Michigan's Jarod Trice in their first-round heavyweight bout. Brantley scored on a pair of escapes in the first and third periods.
