
Panthers Top Southern Illinois 3-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team extended their winning streak to 18 Saturday night, topping Southern Illinois 3-1. Set scores were 25-12, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21.
Five Panthers finished the evening with double-digit kills with Shannon Aschoff chipped in 12 while Bre Payton, Amy Braun and Beth Discher each recorded 10 kills for the Panthers. Ellie Blankenship led the Panther defense with 31 digs.
The Panthers jumped to an early 6-2 lead in the first set and never looked back, taking the first set by a score of 25-12.
In set two, SIU rattled off three points to go ahead 3-0, but kills from Discher, Braun and Burow pulled the score to 6-6. The Salukis stuck with the Panthers the entire set, which featured ten ties until consecutive kills by Braun, Aschoff and Burow gave the Panthers the 25-22 win.
SIU went on an 8-3 run in set three to take an 18-12 lead. But the Panthers charged back to tie the score at 23-23. Three consecutive kills by the SIU offense gave the Salukis the 25-23 win.
SIU held an 11-8 advantage after back-to-back kills by Alysia Mayes forced the Panthers to take a timeout. Out of the break, UNI went on a 9-3 run to pull ahead 17-14. SIU then made a run of their own, tying the score at 17-17. The Panthers finished with an 8-4 run to take set four 25-21.
UNI returns to action Oct. 28 for a non-conference matchup with South Dakota State.
