UNI Improves to 2-0 With 5-2 Win over Western Illinois

The Panthers started the day strong winning two out of the three doubles matches. The UNI tandem of sophomore Sampada Kanade and junior Taynara Moraes held off Amanda Griffin and Kim Lennartsson 8-5, while senior Carolina Hannes and freshman Laia Gonzalez-Garrido beat Kate Kennedy and Courtney Brooks 8-3. Senior Meghana Paritala and freshman Ashton Schwerin were unable to complete the Panther sweep in doubles play falling to Ashley Clark and Yana Meinert 8-5.
UNI continued its success in singles play posting a 4-2 record on the day. Kanade rolled in the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lennartsson, and Moraes posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kennedy. Freshman Diana Mendez improved her singles record to 9-4 on the season winning 6-3, 6-2 over Meinert. Hannes notched her 72 career win as a Panther over Stephanie Baumer 6-0, 6-4. Paritala was held off by the Westerwind's
"This was a really good win for us today," head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "
The Panthers will take next week off and return to the courts on Feb. 15 at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
