EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team bounced back with a strong performance on day two of the Midlands Championships, landing four on the medal stand. Senior Moza Fay led the way with a third-place effort at 165 pounds.
UNI finished in 12th place in the team standings with 49.0 points. Iowa won the team title by edging out Iowa State. UNI was one of only seven teams to have at least four place finishers. Iowa (8), Iowa State (8), Missouri (8), Central Michigan (5), UNI (4), Purdue (4) and Wisconsin (4) were the only schools to have at least four top-eight finishers.
Fay avenged his only loss this season, a quarterfinal tilt earlier in the tournament, to Wisconsin's No. 8-seeded Andrew Howe with a 9-3 triumph. Fay completed the tournament with a 7-1 record, which moved him to 14-1 on the season.
After dropping the match to Howe on Monday, Fay mowed down the competition Tuesday with four straight victories. Fay began the day with a 6-2 win over No. 6-seeded Trevor Stewart (Central Michigan). Fay took down another seed in No. 5 Luke Manuel (Purdue) with a 12-7 triumph. Fay then locked up with No. 2-seeded Nick Marable (Missouri) in the consolation semifinals and scored a 4-2 win over Marable.
In the third-place match, Fay jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Howe responded with a third-period takedown to trim Fay's lead to 5-3, but Fay added an escape, a takedown and a riding time point to tally the 9-3 win.
"Moza just didn't wrestle well all day yesterday, but today he wrestled like an animal," UNI head coach Brad Penrith said. "It was a great day because we went out and competed. We didn't do that yesterday. As a team we won a lot of matches today that we weren't supposed to win."
Junior Tyson Reiner completed a strong Midlands with an eighth-place finish in the 157-pound bracket. Reiner started Tuesday with a 9-7 win over Nick Bertucci (Purdue). Reiner dropped into the seventh-place match after falling 4-0 to No. 5-seeded Scott Winston (Rutgers). Reiner completed his tournament run by losing via fall to Derek Sickles (Columbia) in 2:59. Reiner went 4-3 in the tournament and is now 13-7 on the season.
Junior Charlie Ettelson also netted an eighth-place finish at 149 pounds. Ettelson, the tournament's No. 8 seed, secured a 4-2 decision over Eric Terrazas (Illinois) in his first match of the day. Ettelson came up on the short end of a 4-0 decision to David Cheza (Michigan State) to fall into the seventh-place match. Ettelson suffered a 12-3 major decision setback to No. 7-seeded Heinrich Barnes (Oregon State) in the seventh-place match. Ettelson finished his tournament run with a 3-3 mark and is 16-6 on the year.
Redshirt freshman Christian Brantley could be considered the surprise of the Panther' wrestlers medal stand finishers at this year's Midlands. Brantley entered Tuesday with a match against No. 3-seeded Kyle Massey (Wisconsin), but Brantley was not intimidated and scored a 5-2 win over the Badgers' grappler. Brantley then lost a hard-fought 3-1 decision to No. 1-seeded David Zabriskie (Iowa State) to move the Panther heavyweight into the seventh-place match. Brantley locked horns with Mike Tamillow (Wildcat Wrestling Club) and suffered a 9-5 loss to settle for eighth place.
Senior Andrew Anderson was the lone Panther to advance to the second day and not secure a victory as he fell 3-1 to No. 6-seeded Logan Brown (Purdue).
The Panthers next action will be Jan. 3, 2009, when they take part in the Cleveland State duals in Cleveland, Ohio. UNI will take on Cleveland State, Buffalo and Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
