EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team advanced five wrestlers to the second day of the 2008 Midlands Championships. All five wrestlers will be competing in the wrestlebacks on Tuesday morning.
UNI is in 15th place in the team standings after tallying 27.0 points on Monday.
No. 8-seeded Charlie Ettelson moved on at 149 pounds after posting a pair of victories on Monday. Ettelson began the day with a 16-4 major decision over Joshua Nolan (San Francisco State). Ettelson headed to the quarterfinals after a 16-0 technical fall over Nick DiCarlo (Anderson College). However, Ettelson ran into No. 1-seeded Brent Metcalf (Iowa) in the quarterfinals and dropped a 21-9 major decision to the Hawkeye wrester.
Junior Tyson Reiner went 3-1 on the day including a 6-5 victory over No. 7-seeded Hadley Harrison (Clarion) in the seceond round. Reiner notched a 10-4 win over Brandon Wright (Chattanooga) in the first round and then moved on with the one-point win over Harrison. Reiner advanced to the quarterfinals with a 22-8 major decision over Nick LeClare (Iowa). Reiner eventually fell to No. 2-seeded Cyler Sanderson (Iowa State) in the quarterfinals, 10-2.
No. 1-seeded Moza Fay dropped his first match of the season in the 165-pound quarterfinals to true freshman Andrew Howe (Wisconsin), 14-8. Fay did tally three wins earlier in the day including a fall over David Dwyer (Lincoln College) in the first round round. Fay notched a 14-7 win over Josh Asper (Maryland) and then moved on to the quarterfinals with a 9-3 victory over Jake Kerr (Iowa).
No. 5-seeded Andrew Anderson advanced to Tuesday's action by posting a 3-1 mark in the 197-pound bracket. Anderson began the day with a 5-2 win over Derek Ross (Nebraska-Kearney). Anderson then dropped a 9-5 decision to Trevor Brandvold (Wisconsin) in the second round. Anderson bounced back with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket. Anderson tallied a 5-2 win over Jake Cranford (Arizona State) and then notched a 10-1 major decision over Indiana's Matt Powless.
Heavyweight Christian Brantley also moved on to day two after securing three wins in four matches. Brantley fell in his first match to No. 2-seeded Mark Ellis (Missouri), 6-1. But Brantley came back strong with a 19-10 major decision over Jesse Ruiz (Menlo). Brantley continued his assault on the medal round with an 8-5 win over Chris Kasten (Purdue) and then capped his day with a 6-4 victory over Ed Bordas (Rider).
The action will continue again Tuesday at noon.
