CHULA VISTA, Wis. - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team fell to the Wisconsin Badgers in dual action on Saturday, 36-9. The Panthers received wins from 133-pounder Josh Baldridge and 141-pounder Trent Washington.
Wisconsin started the dual with a 3-2 win at 125 pounds from Drew Hammen over UNI's Josh Baldridge at 133 pounds over Wisconsin's Tom Kelliher.
Redshirt freshman Trent Washington secured a fall over No. 14-ranked Zach Tanelli and 141 pounds. Washington got the fall at the 5:38 mark. Washington was tied with Tanelli 3-3 entering the final period, but Washington scored a reversal and was able to take Tanelli to his back for the pin.
At 149 pounds, the Badgers No. 7-ranked Kyle Ruschell pinned redshirt freshman Jamal Lawrence with only eight seconds left in the match. Lawrence led the match 4-0 early, but trailed 7-4 when he tried to explode and forward roll and got caught on his back.
Wisconsin's Ben Jordan decisioned Tyson Reiner.
Travis Rutt tallied a one-point win over UNI's Jarion Beets at 174 pounds, 5-4. At 184 pounds, Eric Bugenhagen received a forfeit win.
No. 5-ranked Dallas Herbst pinned UNI's Andrew Anderson at 197 pounds. Anderson appeared to score on a high-crotch series shot in the first period, but Herbst was credited with a two-point takedown, shortly after the takedown Anderson was awarded a reversal to knot the match at 2-2. Later in the second period, Anderson had built a tripod stance and rolled out but got caught on his back at the 4:47 mark.
At heavyweight, No. 5-ranked Kyle Massey pinned UNI's Christian Brantley at the 4:15 mark of their match.
UNI was without the services of 149-pounder Charlie Ettelson and 165-pounder Moza Fay due to injuries.
"Charlie and Moza each injured a knee against Iowa in the dual on Thursday, so we kept them out of action as a precaution because the last thing you want to do is lose somebody for the season," UNI head coach Brad Penrith said. "We hope to have them both back healthy very soon."
The Panthers fell to 0-2 dual action. UNI will be in action again next Saturday and Sunday when it takes on Old Dominion and George Mason on the road.
