OMAHA, Neb. - Junior Charlie Ettelson won the 149-pound Elite Division title and seven other University of Northern Iowa wrestlers earned top-five finishes at the Kaufman-Brand Open on Saturday in the Sapp Fieldhouse on the University of Nebraska-Omaha's campus.
Ettelson scored a 7-3 win over fellow teammate Trevor Kittleson in the finals of the 149-pound Elite bracket. Ettelson posted a perfect 4-0 record on the day that included a pair of falls in his first two matches. Kittleson went 3-1 and earned his victories with a technical fall, a fall and a major decision.
Senior Andrew Anderson notched a second-place effort in the 197-pound Elite bracket. Sophomore Jarion Beets (174 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Christian Brantley (285 lbs.) each earned third-place finishes in their respective brackets.
"I was really pleased with how Jarion and Christian bounced back from tough losses in their semifinals and to get third place," head coach Brad Penrith said. "It's hard to bounce back when you have those losses but the way they wrestled the rest of the day really showed me something."
Sophomore Terrance Young took fifth-place honors in the same bracket.
True freshman David Bonin notched a third-place finish in the 165-pound Amateur bracket.
