Stelken, Aschoff lead UNI to Win over Evansville

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Ashten Stelken had 12 kills and Shannon Aschoff added 11 to lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Evansville Friday night at the McLeod Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-16 and 25-21.
The Panthers improved to 15-2 overall and 5-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while the Purple Aces fell to 8-9 and 2-2 in the Valley. The win also improved UNI's all-time record against Evansville to a perfect 30-0 in volleyball.
Kills from Aschoff, Beth Discher and Michelle Burow got UNI off to a 7-3 lead to start the mach. Evansville scored three straight to make it 7-6, but the Panthers then reeled off five in a row of their own to their own to move in front 12-6. After a UE timeout, the Aces pulled within 12-8, but UNI then went on a 5-1 run to open a 17-9 lead and never looked back, posting a 25-18 first-set win.
With the score even at five in set two, the Panthers got kills from Amy Sampson and Burow during a 5-0 run that gave UNI the lead for good, 10-5. Evansville got within 10-8, but UNI then went on a 12-3 streak, with Stelken providing two kills and a block. The Panthers held the Aces to .000 hitting in the second set (8-8-34) as UNI won, 25-16.
The score was tight early in the third set, until broke a 7-all tie with a decisive 9-3 run. Stelken had two kills, and Burow and Discher one each during that stretch, as the Panthers moved in front, 16-10. Evansville made a late run, getting within 23-20, but Stelken and Discher teamed up on a block and Aschoff had the kill on match point in UNI's 25-21 victory.
Sampson had eight kills and Burow seven for the Panthers, while Kayla Grunder added 10. UNI hit .205 (43-16-132) as a team, but held Evansville to .032 (27-23-126) hitting.
UNI next faces Southern Illinois tomorrow night (Oct. 4) at the McLeod Center, with first serve at 7 pm.
