Panthers win five events, break school record in loss to South Dakota.

The University of Northern Iowa swim team fell 160-134 to South Dakota in its home opener Saturday afternoon in the Wellness and Recreation Center pool. UNI held a lead after the swimming contests, but USD compiled 32 points in the diving contests to secure the win.
Freshman Kelly Mateas (Winfield, Ill./Community) tagged close behind in the 500 free, with a second-place finish (5:26.10). Senior Katie Maloy (Auburn, Ind./R. Nelson Snider) and freshman Stephanie Yattoni (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
In the 1,000 free, sophomore Melissa Little (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) took fourth and sixth place to round things out for the Panthers.
Abby Girard (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) continued her spotlight performance for the Panthers, taking the first-place crown in three individual swimevents. Girard swam to first in the 100 (1:15.31) and 200 (2:09.11) back stroke. The junior also took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.42.
Sophomore Josie Itzen (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) was also a top performer on the day, swimming away with two individual titles of her own. Itzen took first in the 200 breast (2:33.86) and 200 free (1:59.49). She competitively pushed Girard in the 200 IM, clocking in with a second-place time of 2:16.53.
Senior Abby Moes (Sioux City, Iowa/East) propelled the Panthers in the water, taking a pair of third-places finishes in the 100 and 200 back. She also place fourth in the 200 IM.
In the 100 breast, junior Maegan Miller (Olathe, Kan./East) was the Panthers' top performer with a third-place time of 1:15.31. Senior Melissa Kilfoy (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) and junior Ally Green (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) came in fifth and sixth, respectively.
McCullough swam to a second-place finish in the 200 fly (2:16.19). Freshman Tori Ward (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) took fourth and Little followed close behind in fifth.
Junior Maggie Rickert (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson) led the way for the Panthers in the 50 free. She sprinted to a time of 25.62. Senior Alexa Armstrong (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) clocked in with a third-place finish and Mateas took sixth in the event.
In the 100 free, Hartman added to her list of accolades with a second-place finish. Junior Ashley Hunter (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) and Armstrong finished four-five in the event.
The Panther's 200 medley relay, consisting of Girard, Rickert, Itzen, and Hunter, finished second with a time of 1:53.28.
Another Panther relay team finished second in the 200 free relay. Hunter, Hartman, Armstrong and Rickert clocked in with a time of 1:42.55
The Panthers will be back in the water on Nov. 1, when they travel to Omaha for a dual with Nebraska-Omaha. The meet begins at 2 p.m.
