
UNI's Nick Baima Advances to Quarterfinals at 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships

Baima will be joined on Friday by teammates sophomore Moza Fay (157 lbs.) and junior C.J. Ettelson. Fay and Ettelson will be in action in the wrestle-back portion of the draw.
The win moved Baima to 36-6 on the year and it advanced him to the quarterfinals for the first time in his collegiate career. Baima's reward for reaching the quarterfinals - a matchup with his nemesis No. 4-seed Travis Paulson (
"I'm happy to reach the quarterfinals, especially after what I've gone through the past two years," Baima said. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow's matchup."
In the second round, Baima and Kiessling were scoreless in the first period, before Baima scored a reversal in the second period. Kiessling escaped with 1:11 left in the second period to pull within 2-1. Baima notched a takedown to take a 4-1 lead with 58 seconds left and then rode out Kiessling to accrue some valuable riding time. Baima secured his second takedown in the third period at the 1:19 mark to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Baima added a riding time point with 2:45 in advantage time for the 7-1 triumph.
Sophomore No. 10-seeded Moza Fay battled No. 7-seeded Craig Henning (
The result was a stunning turnaround from the last meeting between Fay and Henning. Henning scored a 16-0 win when the teams met for a dual on Dec. 9 in
"I didn't know how to wrestle him before, but tonight I stuck to my plan and almost got it done," Fay said. "Coach Penrith was telling me no legs on Henning but I just didn't follow through."

Four Panthers began their journey through the wrestlebacks. C.J. Ettelson (141 lbs.), Alex Dolly (174 lbs.) and Andrew Anderson (197 lbs.) all were in action in the latter portion of Session II.

Dolly saw his tournament come to an end as No. 7-seeded Brandon Sinnott scored a 12-2 major decision in their 165-pound wrestle-back bout.
The total attendance for day one of the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships was 27,891, including 14,004 for Session II.
SESSION I RECAP
After Session I, the Panthers were in 21st place in the team standings with 6.0 points.
Freshman Kyle Anson got the tournament underway for the Panthers with an 8-2 win over Eric Albright (
Anson then took on No. 5-seeded Matt Keller (
On Thursday, Keller jumped to an early 5-1 lead, but Anson responded with a four-point move in the second period to knot the mach at 5-5. Keller scored an escape to end the second period and then tallied a takedown at the 1:35 mark of the third period to take an 8-5 lead. However, Anson could muster only an escape with seven seconds left in the match, while Keller added a riding time point for the 9-6 win.
Junior C.J. Ettelson suffered a first-period fall to No. 2-seeded Derek Moore (UC Davis) in a 141-pound first-round match.
Sophomore Moza Fay, the tournament No. 10 seed in the 157-pound bracket, also ran into a familiar foe in his first-round match. Fay matched up against Jacob Yost (
Fay scored the first points of the match with a first-period takedown. Fay then rode out Yost to end the period and racked up 2:24 of riding time while taking a 2-0 lead. Fay chose down in the second period and added to his lead with a reversal with 1:25 left in the second period. Fay continued his dominant ride in the second period and closed out the period with a 4-0 lead and a 3:16 advantage in riding time. Fay got a reversal to begin the third period and added a three-point nearfall plus a stalling point to take a dominant 11-0 major decisIon over Yost. Fay ended the match with 4:48 in riding time.
Senior Nick Baima, the No. 5 seed at 165 pounds, began his final quest for All-America honors and a national title with a first-round matchup against Shawn Kitchner (Brown). Baima led 2-0 after one period and added an early reversal in the second for a 4-0 advantage. Baima added another point for riding time and closed out Kitchner with a 5-0 win to advance to the second round.
Junior Alex Dolly squared off against No. 10-seeded Matthew Herrington (Penn) in a first-round 174-pound match. Herrington scored first with a takedown and Dolly answered quickly with an escape, but trailed 2-1 after the initial period. Herrington added an escape and a takedown in the second period to up his lead to 5-1 over Dolly. Herrington closed out the match in the third period with a fall at the 6:07 mark of the match.
Sophomore Andrew Anderson took on No. 2-seeded Joshua Glenn (American) in a first-round 197-pound match. Glenn scored first in the bout with a takedown only 35 seconds into the first period. Glenn added three more points in the second period to take a 5-0 lead into the final stanza. Glenn then took total control in the third period and won via major decision, 14-2.
